X Factor oddball Wagner banged on judge Cheryl Cole’s dressing room door and begged her to forgive him after he mocked her upbringing.
The Brazilian weirdo was desperate to avoid an on-air clash with Cheryl after describing her as “just a girl from a council estate who got lucky”.
But livid Cheryl REFUSED to see him and told him to “get lost” when he went looking for her before Saturday’s show.
A pal of the Girls Aloud star, 27, said: “He knew she was livid about what he had said and came marching up to her dressing room demanding to see her.
“He was begging to be forgiven and given the chance to explain.
“But she was getting changed and didn’t want to see him.
“He could have tried to make amends earlier – but for some reason he chose to try and tackle her minutes before the show. Maybe he had heard she was going to mention it on the show.”
And Cheryl did put the singer on the spot by challenging him on air about his insensitive remarks. She told him: “Normally I don’t have anything constructive to say to you. But I’ve heard this week you have been making some comments about me to the Press about being from a council estate.
“Yes I am – and I am very proud of my roots and I am very lucky.”
Panicked Wagner, 54, tried to dig himself out of the hole by explaining he was only trying to give her a compliment.
But his words fell on deaf ears. He was later seen crying backstage as Cheryl continued to refuse to speak to him.
The source added: “Wagner felt he had insulted the person on the show that all the viewers loved, so it meant curtains for him.
“He started raging about how no one understood him and that he was always being picked on. It was pretty pathetic really.”
Meanwhile, it has emerged that weary Cheryl will turn her back on Britain to spend Christmas in Los Angeles with her dancer pal Derek Hough.
The Geordie beauty wants to escape the backlash from X Factor fans over her show decisions this series. She sparked national outrage by axing viewer’s favourite Gamu Nhengu at bootcamp. Gamu, 18, and her benefit cheat mum now face being deported back to Zimbabwe.
Cheryl received death threats, forcing her to ramp up security at her £3.5million Surrey home.
And hated Katie has narrowly escaped the boot four times after being repeatedly dumped into the live sing-off by the public.
Mentor Chezza then angered her acts by flying out to America at the start of the month. It was on that trip she began house hunting in LA with Derek, 25. She plans to jet to America as soon as the ITV contest finishes next month.
Her mum Joan Callaghan is begging her not to go. She wants Cheryl to enjoy a traditional family Christmas in Newcastle upon Tyne.
But Cheryl is adamant that she wants to flee the storm this year’s X Factor has created.
She also got slated for miming her current single Promise This on the show last month.
And on-screen feuds with show supremo Simon Cowell and fellow judge Louis Walsh have dented her golden girl reputation.
A source said: “She just wants to get out. She’s had enough and just wants to be out of the public glare in the UK for a couple of weeks.
“Cheryl has told her mum they’ll have a belated Christmas when she returns.”
Cheryl won the public’s heart when she divorced England and Chelsea footballer Ashley Cole for cheating on her and the recent negative publicity has hurt her. The show source explained: “Cheryl isn’t used to public criticism. She’s used to being a national treasure, so she’s found it hard.”
