Cheryl Fernandez-Versini does not mind her hopefuls getting emotional – because she admits she cries at the drop of a hat.
Stunning Cheryl has landed the Girls category — Chloe-Jasmine Whichello, Lauren Platt, Stephanie Nala and one as yet unnamed wild card — who have all spent much of their time on the show in tears.
But Cheryl is not fazed — because she loves a good weep too.
Speaking exclusively to The Sun, she said: “They’ll get emotional, they’ll have days when they smash it out of the park and other days when they don’t feel so confident.
“Women sometimes feel different from day to day.
“And I’m really glad that, as a woman, I can be there for them when they’re going through that.
“It’s an understanding we’ll have between us.
“I was crying at Planet of the Apes the other day. A friend of mine was, like: ‘Are you for real?’ But it’s sad and I was, like: ‘How can you not feel that?’
“I was so soft when I was the girls’ age.
“I would literally watch a horse racing and, if it broke its leg, would have been crying for two days.
“Emotion can be a good thing. I’ve been on the brink of emotion and performed before and that’s fine if you can just keep it in check. It’s something we’ll work on, putting it into the performance but not letting it bubble over too much.”
And Cheryl has promised to keep her dressing room door at the X Factor studios in Wembley open to the girls so they can pop in for advice at any time.
She revealed: “Everyone else has to knock — unless it’s one of the girls. They can come in any time.” Cheryl is confident she has the X Factor winner within her category, and picked each girl because they are so different.
She said: “It’s pointless for me to have a blueprint of a singer.
“For one thing, they would be in direct competition with each other — not just in the show but afterwards.
“I don’t want four singers that all sing amazingly. It doesn’t do anything for me, that. I want diversity and excitement.”
Cheryl can’t pick a favourite — but said she likes each girl for a very different reason.
It certainly sounds like Cheryl is supremely confident that she can beat fellow mentors Simon Cowell, Louis Walsh and Mel B to win her third X Factor.
She smiled: “I’m very happy with my girls. Simon, Louis and Mel need to watch out. I’ll show them how it’s done.”
